Blue Hole, Old Baldy, the square, and Cypress Creek

Things To Do in Wimberley

Reserve a Blue Hole swim, climb Old Baldy, browse Wimberley Square, or hike at Jacob's Well Natural Area while swimming there remains closed.

Blue Hole swimming versus Jacob's Well hiking

These are not two interchangeable swimming holes. Blue Hole Regional Park offers reserved swimming during its open season. Hays County's July 18, 2026 alert says Jacob's Well is not allowing swimming and the Natural Area is open for hiking only.

  • Blue Hole: reserve one of the published half-day swim sessions and check the city status page before leaving.
  • Jacob's Well: visit the spring and natural area on foot; do not arrive expecting to swim.
  • Both sites are subject to current rules and conditions, so open the official status pages again on the trip date.

Limestone trail through a Hill Country natural area

Walk the natural area above the spring

Jacob's Well remains worth seeing for its artesian spring, limestone landscape, and preserve trails. Treat it as a hiking and natural-history stop while swimming is closed, and follow the latest county alert and posted boundaries.

Walk Wimberley Square

Shops, galleries, coffee, and restaurants

Wimberley Square is the compact commercial center, with shops, galleries, coffee, and restaurants close enough to explore on foot. It is an easy stop after checking in or after a morning at Blue Hole.

  • Browse earlier or later on hot days; shade is uneven and parked cars heat quickly.
  • Give the galleries and artisan shops time rather than using the square only as a meal stop.
  • Check current restaurant and live-music hours before counting on a late evening.

Guided outdoor adventure

Ride 10 lines at Wimberley Zipline

Wimberley Zipline runs a guided 10-line course through Hill Country terrain, with canyon views and a stated tour length of 1.5 to 2 hours. Tours require reservations; check the operator's current eligibility, clothing, weather, and cancellation rules before booking.

Three more ways to see Wimberley

Old Baldy

Climb the stone steps for a high view over Wimberley and the surrounding Hill Country. The exposed ascent is better in cooler morning or evening temperatures.

Cypress Creek and the Blanco River country

The creeks, limestone crossings, and ranch roads around Wimberley explain the town's geography. Respect private property and use designated public access rather than treating every visible bank as a swimming stop.

Jacob's Well Natural Area

See the artesian spring and walk the preserve's trails. Swimming is currently closed, but the geology, cypress habitat, and open natural area still justify a visit.

What first-timers usually get wrong

Hill Country overlook near Wimberley

The most important mistake is treating Blue Hole and Jacob's Well as equivalent swim stops. The second is underestimating summer heat on Old Baldy or arriving at Blue Hole without a reservation.

  • Reserve Blue Hole before the trip if swimming is the priority.
  • Do not assume a Jacob's Well visit includes swimming; check the current county alert.
  • Overnights allow time for the square and dinner after the outdoor stops.
  • Save one Old Baldy for cooler temperatures, and carry water on the exposed climb.
