Blue Hole reservations and current Jacob's Well access

Wimberley Water & Swimming Guide

Swim at Blue Hole Regional Park with a reservation. Visit Jacob's Well for the spring, trails, and natural area—but not for swimming while the current Hays County closure remains in effect.

Current access: Blue Hole swim season is open with required half-day reservations. Hays County's alert updated July 18, 2026 says Jacob's Well is not allowing swimming and the Natural Area is open for hiking only. Recheck both official sites before travel.

Reserve Blue Hole before the trip

Blue Hole uses published half-day swimming sessions during its season. Choose the 9 a.m.–1 p.m. or 2–6 p.m. session first, then check the city status and water-quality pages on the trip date.

Blue Hole is Wimberley's swim destination

Cypress shade, lawns, and a defined swimming area make Blue Hole the straightforward choice for families and first-time visitors. Admission to the park does not guarantee a swim slot.

Jacob's Well is currently hiking-only

The artesian spring and surrounding natural area remain open to visitors, but swimming is closed under the latest county alert. No reservation or fee is required for a hiking visit under the current park rules.

What Blue Hole offers

The city park pairs spring-fed Cypress Creek with mature cypress trees and grassy banks. A half-day reservation gives enough time to swim and cool off without assigning the entire weekend to one park.

Why visit Jacob's Well without swimming

Jacob's Well is the visible outlet of an artesian spring and a focal point within a protected natural area. Walk the trails, see the spring from the designated viewing area, and follow the posted rules around the water.

The preserve's trails cross limestone and Hill Country vegetation above the spring. This contextual trail view is not a documentary image of a named trail; use the county map and posted signs for the actual route.

A Blue Hole half-day

  • Morning session: The published 9 a.m.–1 p.m. slot avoids some of the day's strongest heat.
  • Afternoon session: The 2–6 p.m. slot leaves the morning open for the square or Old Baldy.
  • After swimming: Change into dry clothes before heading to the square or a restaurant.
  • Before either slot: Check the current swim-season banner and water-quality reports.

What to bring

  • Water-friendly shoes if you want a more comfortable shoreline approach.
  • A dry bag or waterproof pouch for phones, keys, and the things you do not want baking on the bank.
  • Sun protection and drinking water for exposed parking areas and trails.
  • Old Baldy, Wimberley Square, or the Jacob's Well trails if water access changes.

Wimberley Swimming Holes FAQ

Blue Hole and Jacob's Well have different access rules. Check both official sites again before your trip.

01Can you swim at both Blue Hole and Jacob's Well?+

No. Blue Hole Regional Park offers reserved swimming during its open season. Hays County's alert updated July 18, 2026 says Jacob's Well is not allowing swimming and the Natural Area is open for hiking only. Read the current county alert before visiting.

02Do you need a reservation to swim at Blue Hole?+

Yes during the published swim season. The City of Wimberley currently offers half-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. Check the current season banner, availability, swimming FAQs, and water-quality reports before travel.

03Is Wimberley better as a day trip or an overnight?+

A day trip works from Austin or San Antonio, especially with a Blue Hole reservation already secured. Stay overnight if you also want time for the square, Old Baldy, dinner, and a Jacob's Well hiking visit.

04What is the best season for a first Wimberley trip?+

Blue Hole's normal published swim season runs from May 1 through Labor Day, plus September weekends, subject to current conditions. Cooler months suit Old Baldy, the Jacob's Well trails, the square, and Hill Country drives without summer heat.
